This is a standard physics problem, and I am also an avid golfer. There is a total momentum (velocity times mass). Then, the club’s mass is many times that of the ball. During impact, the club loses limited velocity, which is transferred to the lighter ball. Total momentum does not change, so if total momentum was 100 the club can retain 85, the ball 10 (at lesser mass, equaling greater velocity), and some loss to friction. This transfer is done during the ball’s compression, which prolongs impact and therefore energy transfer time.
