All golfers know about the pressure that can build up in us as we line up our putts and expect to hole them, for pleasure or profit. If you are playing singles you are holing the putt for yourself and your score, or perhaps to win or halve the hole. If you are playing with three or more players, then the golf match is more of a team game and you are not putting just for yourself but for the team, and this is where the mental pressure can build up and overpower you if you don’t have a strategy for coping with it.

There must be a way of coping with the pressure putts or professional golfers would not sink them as often as they do, and more easily than the average golfer does, especially the high handicap players.

How do you hole those pressure putts from up to five feet from the cup?

I don’t know about you but when I have to make one of these putts it sometimes seems like the putter is frozen in my hands, I just can’t seem to move it to play the stroke, because I have let the pressure build up in me so much, instead of trying to channel it somewhere else, as the professionals do.

If you have the same problem coping with pressure putts, you have to get rid of the immediate thoughts in your mind. Divert them somewhere else, otherwise the fear of missing the putt will overpower you, and you will miss the putt. It’s like you talked yourself in to missing it.

The way I find helps me most is to fix my concentration on playing the putt to the exclusion of everything else. That’s all I need to think about, and then I can use all my concentration to play the best shot I can. I rely on the subconscious mind to remember the practice putts I have tucked away so easily, and this overcomes my current fear.

You can do this with practice, it is just a matter of convincing yourself that a practice putt is no different from playing a real putt under pressure, because the putting stroke is the same.
