This happens a lot to me.
I make a practice swing which feels good. Relaxed, on-plane and brushes the grass where I want it to. I can do it again.
But then, I step up and put the club behind the ball. I try to do the same thing but just can’t. It seems like I have to lift the club to get it up. The plane angle is wrong. The face is too open etc. etc. And surely enough, when I make the swing, I hit it fat or thin or pull or push.
What changes so much when behind the ball? Are there any mental or physical tips to help me swing the same way I did the practice swing?

Go to the driving range and practice a lot more. On the range, you could pretending you are practising and accidentally hit the ball. I use to think that the practice swing is better, too, but in fact it is not as you are not committed to it. Cure your real swing is better.
keep an even tempo. i like 1-2-3 (back) 4-5-6 (thru) make sure that you don’t stand over the ball too long… if you want some more tips check out any of dr.bob rotella’s books… golf is not a game of perfect is my favorite- i skim it before any major High School tournament
Hey man, you just need to not let you brain get in the way. Simply, your just thinking about it way to much. When you take a practice swing your not worried about when the ball is going to end up, or am I going to slice this sucker out of bounds. Your just relaxed and swinging at, usually 80% of full, a smooth tempo. All you have to do is just let your muscle memory, and your hands, do the rest. The only thing that should go through you mind at address is smooth controlled swing, the club will get the ball in the air, that’s why they have lofted faces. Hope this helps it has been working for me since I was 8. Oh, and most importantly have FUN, after all it’s a game that CAN’T be won.
most of it is mental. there are a few little practice tips that can build up your confidence in hitting a ball. first, for your irons, tee up the ball on the range really low to the ground to mimic hitting it off the ground. this’ll give you some more confidence since tees can compensate for mishits a little bit. do not use those excessively high rubber tees available at some ranges that use grass mats. second, practice taking half swings and three-quarter swings with the ball on the ground before moving into the full swing. the full swing is simply an elongation of a chip or pitch. finally, don’t think about it too much. if you build up a negative view of hitting the ball in your brain, it’ll only get worse over time. my mother hates hitting out of sand and her negativity has resulted in some disastrous holes around the green. in addition, if there is any difference physically about your swing, it usually stems from one thing. for example, if i bring my club back way too inside, my body’s only reaction is to adjust my hand position at the top and swing across my body, resulting in a closed clubface, my club coming way too inside in the follow through, and the ball slicing. as you can see, that was the result of one thing. thus, if you can pinpoint a single thought in your mind to change, the other changes will follow accordingly.
i had the same thing happening to me.. so i quit practice swings.. and just take aim.. it helped a ton..
“Zinger” Paul Azinger.. says that he never takes a practice swing.. why use the good one on practice..lol
The easiest thing to correct your mistake is just relax, and here is my tips for you to correct your mistakes: First, look at the ball when you are having your backswing, then don’t be nervous of hitting the ball (because many amateurs are thinking of hitting the ball into the air). The only thing you need to think about is get your club as long as you could through impact, then you will hit a shot that is with a divot but good result. Trust me, after you have use this method, you can hit a lot of great iron shots .
OK listen; let’s work on your routine. Go to the range to practice. The last 10 or 15 balls; work on your routine. Forget mechanics on the course. Stand behind the ball and look at the target. Imagine the ball flying up in the air toward your target. Actually see it land where you want it. Maybe even imagine it going in the hole, or center of fairway. The main thing is to visualize, in your minds eye, the shot you want to hit. As you are doing this, grip the club and feel the weight of the club head. Think of putting the face of the club on the back of the ball. Walk over to the address position. Look at your target. Remember the ball flight you visualized. Look back at the ball. Swing. Let it happen. experience the shot that you visualized.
Develop your own routine utilizing those parameters. Try not to take too many practice swings. Or take one just at the start of your routine. Keep your routine the same way for every shot. Find one to help you get in the zone. Golf is to be played and enjoyed. You can do it. Good Luck!!!
the majority of people have this problem, when you see the ball you try and hit it as opposed to swinging through it, for kicks get set up as you would normally to swing at the ball and close your eyes before you swing. it sounds crazy but i have seen it help people before
The easiest way to get over ur problem would be to focus on tempo and hitting THROUGH the ball not at it. most beginner and high handicap players hit at the ball and not through it as is the correct method
