He hits hard grounders most of the time but i’d like him to hit liners and possibly a homer or 2. any suggestions for his stance, swing or anything else? He swing level and seems to turn his hips well. btw i’m a very supportive Dad and could care less if he goes 0 for 10. just looking to help him out.

  1. Drew Said,

Well first, never actually have him trying to hit homeruns. You will create far more problems. Check out where he holds the bat in his batting stance. If you want more line drives, drop the bat lower so it’s easier to make a short, straight, compact swing. A lot of times with young players they will hold their bat up so high that if they get a high pitch they just chop an easy grounder back to the pitcher. Also, try to enforce a hit it wear it’s pitched type of rule/guideline. That means if the pitch is outside, the ball should go to rightfield (or leftfield if he’s a lefty), and if the pitch is inside it should go to leftfield (or right if he’s lefty). The sooner he understands basic hitting strategies the better off he will be. On a final note, remember he’s only 8 years old. Part of being that young is learning what type of ballplayer you are gonna be.

  2. Brian T Said,

Let him stay with the grounders. When he gets older he will experiment with hitting the ball up, but hitting grounders is much more efficient, and in the long run will be mroe beneficial. He gets older and you will be begging him to hit it on the ground.

  3. E.G. Emeritus Said,

Get a copy of Ted Williams’ book, “Science of Hitting” and memorize it.
