get a set routine. as for your grip find one that lets you stroke the putter with the least wrist action make sure your eyes are directly over the ball in your stance place the ball where you will catch it on the upstroke you’ll roll it better this way the other is pratice from ten feet in those are the stroke savers the last thing i would like you to try is when you pratice work on line and speed and the stroke itself not on how many you make or miss

I recently read a book called “Putting Out of Your Mind.” Actually, I listened to it. In it, the author talks about some focusing techniques that really help you make your putting about a physical motion, getting rid of all of the distractions that can so easily screw up an easy putt. I think it’s well worth the ~$10 I paid to buy it.
Also, as another user said, a routine is a very valuable tool to help you get in a groove and feel comfortable on just about any putt.
The main strategy I use (which I got from the book) is to pick out a very particular target and focus all of my thinking on that spot. Then, I let my body take over and “do its thing” without my mind getting in the way. Generally, this works well, like tossing someone a ball. If you just let your body do it, and don’t overthink it, your sub/un-conscious mind will be able to perform remarkably well.
This doesn’t mean to just walk up and smack the ball. Examine the green. Pick your line. Take a few practice putts. But once you pick your target and get over the ball, be ready to pull the trigger quickly to avoid your mind screwing up your stroke. I find that this method gives me the smoothest stroke and more 1 putts. In fact, I’ve have about 3 or 4 fewer putts per round recently, and a whole lot of tap-in 2nd putts since reading this book.

    1. Work hard at visualizing the correct line before you strike the ball
    2. Always putt like you are a pendulum toward that line you visualized. Keeping the putter square to the line and practice, practice, practice.
    3. Get a friend and go to a practice green and compete on who can putt the least number of shots per hole and make it a competitive task. This will force you to really try hard and you will learn.

Putting. Line it up, take into account the break–more on wet green and less on dry, more on long/fast putts and less on short/slow. Lastly, imagine a circle about 20% of the distance to the hole–if you’re 30 feet away, imagine a six-foot circle around the cup. You want to put the ball within *that* circle. If you’re 10 feet away, imagine a two-foot circle. You’ll notice that with less pressure to hole out in one putt, you’ll putt better.

I agree with Ronnie, for the most part. It’s crucial to have a pre-shot routine for all shots, but particularly putting. And keep your wrists straight.
    Some tips:
    - get your line and trust it
    - move your forward elbow slightly toward the hole to promote more of a pendulum swing and to still your wrists.
    - make contact above the equator of the ball to induce a forward roll with no bounce.
    - Feed the hole (3 words I say to myself just before I make contact)
