I would go talk to the golf coach -- he/she will know what you need to do to make the team.
I went to a small school where they were just happy to have players -- even if they weren't good. Sometimes just a good attitude is enough to make the team and then you can learn the game.

First - don't join varsity golf team . Get with a golf instructor and start playing golf. Join a club as a Junior member. if you are able to join the golf team ( in general - not varsity or anything ) ... you can maybe practice with the team. Put in extra time and get your parents buy in. Without Funds - I'm afraid this is not going to work out for you. Golf requires an investment by the parent and the child. The child needs to show the interest and make a committment. The rest usually comes with time.

If you've never played on a golf course, don't think about trying out for your high school varsity golf team.
Even if you go to the range and hit every ball straight, it's not even comparable to the experience at a course. From the range, you're hitting off a flat surface. On a course, there are bumps everywhere. You could be hitting out of a divot, you could be hitting out of long grass, you could be hitting out of the woods, you could be hitting out of a pile of leaves, you could be hitting on the side of a hill, you could be at such an angle that your golf swing is like a baseball swing.
And, I'm not sure whether you've putted on actual greens or on plastic astroturf greens. If you've only putted on fake greens, then you're just under the false impression that you putt extremely well.
I'm not trying to sound mean, but golf is a sport that requires complete dedication and endless course time in order to become a solid player.

Ignore these people, the team does not start practice until late summer. That gives you plenty of time to get an instructor, have your parents get you a set of clubs and a membership, and you can play with people on the varsity team. The worst thing that can happen is you make JV or none at all, if you make JV though at least you can get more practice. The instructor will be your best bet though and will tell you if you are ready whenever late summer rolls around.
