I want to take up golf but think it’s going to cost me a packet.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get into the game without forking out loads of money on equiptment and course fees.

I tried playing it in my (small) back garden and ended up smashing my neighbours conservatory window not once, but twice (in the same night). Do not do this – it is not cheap!
Getting into the game cheaply is just finding used equipment, and a place to practice. This however is a contradiction within itself. Possibly the most expensive simple hobby known to man, golf is going to cost you.

Withour having read the previous answers to mine. I would suggest getting an idea of the size of the club you need in relation to your height. I would then assume at least for the time being that you would want a regular flex shaft. There are other factors involved, but by starting with flex and length, you are on the right track. The next step is to locate clubs and there are a number of sources for that. You won’t need to spend a lot until you are sure you want to continue and your game improves. Look everywhere, I found a nice set in a pawn shop of all places! Newspaper classifieds, golf shops for used clubs or simply asking around with people you know play the game. One thing everyone should tell you is to start with a few lessons, do not try to teach yourself or have a friend attempt to teach you. Lessons do not have to be costly especially when you want to learn the basics of the swing. In my area you can get a series of six lessons from a teaching pro for less than $150.00 at a city driving range. I wish I had gotten lessons from the start, now I am learning the whole swing process correctly and trust me it is hard teaching an old dog new tricks.
Greens fees vary from course to course, the real good courses will be costly, but you can get on a nice city or county course reasonably.
Heck, you might even want to start by playing executive courses and par 3’s. I say that because those irons are a little easier to hit properly compared to the long irons and your experience will be building confidences.

either borrow some off a friend have a few rounds then see. or go to either your local club shop or american golf and see what clubs they have second hand. there’s some great deals out there at the moment.. or lastly try jjb cheap enough for starter kits. depends on budget
