My friend is a great golfer (5 handicap) but whenever she plays in a tournament, she invariably chokes. She’ll play well the first day, and then on the second day she’ll have one or two “blow-up” holes. She says that deep down she feels she is not good enough. Does anyone have any tips to help her get over this?

it is a persons fear that gets them caught in that situation. its that feeling of your going to win and you don’t want to screw up that gets in your way. what you need to do is not try cause if you can do well by yourself than you need to relax and not think about what your trying to do. treat it like any other day. you have done it plenty times before so all you need to do is play the game like you do with your friends. stay relaxed and be comfortable and DON”T think about winning cause if she is that good when she is not in the competition then she is getting in her own way. TREAT IT LIKE ANY OTHER DAY AND DON’T TRY TO WIN, JUST PLAY.

I would suggest playing a variety of courses. If you play the same course all the time you get too comfortable.
In tournaments under pressure your swing speeds up a little and your timing is off. Be sure to slow the backswing down and pause/set at the top.
If you would like to practice under stress here’s a great game(if you have a course you can practice on). Lots of people like to play in scarmbles. Play a two ball worst ball scramble with yourself. Play two balls on each hole. After each shot select the worst shot, pick up the best shot, and drop another ball. Repeat until you hole out. This format puts pressure on your game. When you make that 3 footer for par then you have to do it again for it to count. Good luck.

Just walk away and take a breather. You always play better when you are relaxed.

I have no serious answer but tell her not to eat too fast. Especially chicken bones ala Mama Cass.

She has to get out of her “comfort zone”. If she is comfortable with those scores, that is where she will stay because the thought of success is scarier than the thought of losing. Until she reverses that, she will have that problem.
Or she should be in match play. Whether you lose a hole by one or by six, it is still only one hole lost.

    don’t swallow the golf balls

one shot at a time, do not focus on score and don’t worry about what other people think of your shots. it is just you and the ball out there, golf is a test of ones self.

About the only thing that will help is experience.
She can take some classes where she is in front of the public such as speech classes or possibly Toastmasters.
This will make you comfortable before the public.
She has to have confidence in herself at some point, maybe it’s partially shyness.

  9. Lunatic Videos Said,

Possibly she just isnt cut out to be a competitive golfer.
You can be a good golfer and not play in tournaments, there is nothing wrong with that.
I dont need to play in events to know how I stack up to the masses.
Golf is supposed to be enjoyable not stressful.
    Think about it.

  10. W Said,

Imagine you’re just playing all by your self.

I think she’s very similar to the way I play. I just expect a lot less from myself and tell myself that I’m not as good as Tiger, set my goals a little lower (higher score) and feel satisfied with every shot I make

  12. Harvey Said,

This is a great question and something that happens to alot of golfers, myself being one of then.
Some of the things that I have done to get over this problem is:
Go to course that I have never played before and get paired up with people I don’t know. This takes me out of my confront zone and makes me play my game and focus on my game.
    Believe in myself
    Trust my clubs and talent
In tournament play I play one shot at a time, one hole at a time. With ever shot my game restarts. This is actually one of the hardest things to do in golf any pro will tell you that.
Last but not least, I will go to a course that is on the slower side, meaning not bussy and try to find that crappy spots on the course and try to work my way out of them. It helps me believe in myself to get out of a bad situation and either save a par or at worst a bogey.
Hope this helps you/your friend out.

blow up holes usually happen when someone tries to do too much with a shot…. if you hit a shot in the trees and try to save yourself on a difficult shot, you automatically bring double bogey into play. for a 5 handicap or better golfer, if you pitch out then you shouldn’t get worse than bogey (more often than not). also, its reps.. especially putting. knock in 100 4ft putts when practicing putting. so when the pressure is on you’ve done it 100s or 1000s of times, and it shouldn’t be a big deal. a preshot rountine is big after bad holes so you have something to go to when things are going bad. experience is also a huge factory for tournaments.. its not like playing a round with your friends. and last but probably the most important thing is confidence. don’t be too humble. every good athlete i’ve ever known was cocky. how they express it is up to the individual. i’m a scratch golfer that plays in tournaments too, so hopefully that helped.

haha someone’s been taking lessons from Phil Mickleson :) She should just calm down, and shut out the world untill she is comfortable, not thinking about anything, but golf, and just going with the flow
