If u want to play for fun and improve, then i really suggest you take some lessons… I am a beginner and i was trying to do things on my own and was wasting time and money on driving ranges and par-3 golf courses…
The book only helps so much…
Start with lessons.. goto driving range and if u ever wanna start playing on the course, start with par-3 courses….
good luck… its really a beautiful sport.

work on hitting the ball straight not far, and work on your short game (chipping, pitching putting etc.)

A beginner lesson is an excellent idea.
Also, pick some non-busy times to play. 2:00PM to 4:00PM seem to be pretty open on many courses. This way you can play without being rushed by impatient groups that catch up to you as often. I think it’s good to learn how to hit every club in your bag so do not shy away from playing the par 72 course.

go play a bunch. i’ve been playing for a while and when i first started all i did was go to the range, big mistake. get expeirience on courses first. this is especially true if you are going to compete, like on a school team. start off small, dont try to kill the ball. its better to be in the middle 100 yards that in knee high weeds 300 yards. you need to get a feel of how to swing a club. after you get your swing down, then you can gas it up. theres not much more to say, its like nike-just do it! one more tip:dont be hard on yourself. a little dicipline is ok, but dont go over the top. in my 1st year i was incredibaly hard on myself…have fun!!!! good luck

First, get some lessons from a local professional. The rates vary, usually around $45 per 1/2hr. It will be the best money you ever spent.
Usually, one can find group lessons through a local JR. College, or the Recreation Dept. of a local city.
Once you have had a few lessons and have practiced the techniques, it’s time to determine what clubs fit your swing. To determine this ask the Pro or Coach to determine your swing type. If it’s fast and strong, a set of (regular type shafts), steel will work. If you are a female, go with graphite shafts. Usually lady flex shafts, will be a good place to start.
If you are older, graphite shafts are more forgiving than steel.
There are quite a few types of shafts for clubs out there. In steel it’s, Stiff, Regular, Flex, from strong fast swings to slower easy swings, flex shafts are usually used by older people and women. The types of graphite shaft vary but, usually graphite is equivalent to stiff steel, regular graphite is standard and Flex is for Women and Seniors.
Graphite shafts have more rotational twist than steel. A good quality graphite shaft will not rotate much. Aldila and Harrison shafts are the best in that aspect.
You should be able to feel where the club is during the swing. That is the key, as to bring the club through the ball and have your hands and the clubhead there at the same time. This will produce a consistant striking of the ball. Do not force the club through to the ball as it’s good tempo and good contact that makes it a good strike. Sure Tiger. and the like ,swing fast but, it took years of practice of their techniques to a point, that they can progressivley accelerate through the golf swing.

setup a beginner lesson with a pro at your local golf course….it will be fairly inexpensive and you will learn the basics to get you started on your way

You need to take lessons before you hit the links. It’s not a sport you can master without the basic guidelines on how to balance yourself and swing the club.
Also don’t get frustrated easily, this sport burns people out VERY fast.
