I am about to play my first game of golf with my friend and her new boyfriend, as well as my husband. My husband isn’t experienced but is good at everything, and my friend and her boyfriend have both played a bit in the past.
I need tips on everything, from what to take with me, what to wear, and what clubs to stick to and what to do with them.

apparel should be loose, comfy casual. have a water bottle and towel in the bag. stay within yourself. meaning you’re not a pro. golf is difficult enough so enjoy it at the level you’re at. enjoy the social aspect. learn and observe the etiquette. take it slow, keep your eye on the ball, and remember, a great nineteenth hole makes evrything all better.

The first responder should get the * for his answer, he is spot on. I would add that you, as a beginner, are not going to be good because noone starts golf and is a natural so don’t be down on yourself and have fun. Don’t get caught up on score, there is time for that as you practice and improve at the range or on non-busy golf days.
Also important is speed of play. Take lots of extra balls CHEAP – INEXPENSIVE balls and don’t be so caught up on finding the one that got away. Just grab another one and toss it down and hit it. Or if you hit a few bad shots and are playing slow, just pick up your ball and move up to where your husband is and play from where his ball is or take a hole off if you get frustrated.
Your group and the group behind will appreciate you playing quickly. As a starter once said to me “you can be bad but you don’t have to be slow”.

Just be yourself – go as you are and have fun. That’s the beauty of golf – it’s for everyone. The worst thing to do is have all the equipment and not know what to do with it!
Just one tip – don’t try to hit the ball hard – it doesn’t go further!

This is way too much to answer in a reply. Take a look at the following site for golf beginners, and read your way around from there.

  8. toughnot Said,

Go to a real cheap, nine hole course and don’t worry about anything. You can rent clubs there, buy cheap water balls and tees there. Oh, and take a cooler full of your favorite beverage.
