As a golf instructor (to add to what Bodhi answered) after you get clubs that fit you, get quality golf instruction. Find a good instructor in your area and take lessons.
Do not go out and buy a full set right away. It may not bethe right one for you. Start with an used set of select clubs. A driver, a long iron like a 4 or 5, a mid iron 6, a short iron like a 9 or a wedge and a putter. You can even start with only a mid iron and a putter to learn the game, get your swing in place. This will take atleast a couple of months. Now that you are more aware of your game, you will know what you need. You will also know by then whether you want to play in the long term and what this game means to you. This will help you determine the budget you want to spend on your full set.

as a teaching pro I would suggest get a set of clubs that fit, you can go to your local pro or even a local sporting goods store like Dick’s and get even a starter set that fits your height. The biggest problem with beginners is they use clubs that are too long and/or too heavy for them, this produces poor swing habits right from the start that you’ll be combating the rest of your life. So begin with that, a decent starter set may run you $200. Good luck.
Take a few lessons from a teaching pro before you commit to a set of clubs or decide to join a golf course. Learn the etiquette of the game, learn to hit a ball decently well so that you don’t foul up those who are behind you. Once you are familiar with the protocol, then buy the sticks. The pro from whom you took the lessons can make suggestions as to the proper clubs for you. Do much babysitting and save your money.
i suggest you find a clubmaker, fitter in your area, you can start with a non name brand, such as kzg,you can also have made just s few clubs and add on as needed.i would suggest a 3wood,5 wood, and 5,7 9 pw and putter tostart, then add from thier.larry-top 100 retired clubfitter
dont spend more than $175 on clubs if your a beginner. you wont really notice any difference in the clubs until you become a decent golfer anyways Play a few more months and make sure you really enjoy it. it can be a really frustrating sport and you may not like it.
Go to your local golf store and look at a beginner’s set. It shouldn’t be too expensive. A beginner’s set isn’t a complete set, but it will have the basics until you improve. Then you can invest in a complete set.
