When you get in that scenario it feels like things are speeding up and you have trouble thinking clearly. This is the time to back off and slow down. I mean consciously slow your walking pace and breathing and focus on the task at hand, which is analyzing the best place to play the next shot to and playing to that location. It sounds like a cliche, but 1 at a time is the way to do it. When you start thinking about your score, laugh at yourself a little bit, recognize what you’re doing and push it away. Go back to steady routine and play the next shot.
” Boy !! I’m -1 with six to play. ” You were thinking of results not about your shot making which got you to one under. If you have the ability to shoot low you must discipline yourself to ” manage ” the course. The only shot that is important is the one you are about to hit.Starting focusing right at the first drive. ” Where is the best place to hit it ? How do I get it there ? ” Same with the second shot and every one thereafter, including every putt. This goes on for every shot until the last putt on the final hole. Now you add the score.
Maybe you tried to play too aggressively for the occasion. You’re in good company – Phil Mickelson does it on national TV. Is an overly “aggressive” mindset leading to poor choices and costly mistakes? Then you need to think and act more conservatively.
Perhaps you should also spend some time analyzing your mistakes. Sounds like you gave up 4 strokes to par in those last 6 holes. What happened? Did your tee shots go astray? Did you 3-putt? Leave it in the sand? Everything? Maybe a good game analysis program would help. Information is your friend.
Common problem. When you get near the end, you mental process begins to change. You’re no longer in the moment. Your mind drifts forward. Mentally, instead of being “I need to hit THIS shot here” you start thinking “Wow, if I can par in, I’ll shoot xx!” Keep your mind in the present and focus on process, not product.
breathe, and if you are feeling nervous step off the ball and wait till you are calmed down. you should never hit the ball when you are nervous.
Play it one shot at a time! Focus on the present the shot at hand not the future or past, develop a can do attitude! Have confidence in your ability NO NEGATIVE THOUGHTS and have fun!
Concentrate.
