Maybe I’m crazy, but is it racist to assume that somewhere along the line white people were also hung or lynched? I guess I don’t understand the furor behind the golf magazine that showed a picture of a noose on the front cover. If the direct INTENT was to somehow associate it with a certain race and create intimidation, then I would probably understand. But to be up in arms because a picture of a noose was shown, to me is completely insane. Does anyone feel the same way? I mean doesn’t it seem we, as a society, are taking things WAY too personally? Doesn’t racism have to involve INTENT?

  1. Jani Said,

Wow. Lisa is clearly one of those real angry people who need an outlet.
Anyhow, I understand your question. I understand that you’re not in denial about black people particularly being lynched and simply were referring to the fact that lynching was the most common method of capital punishment WORLDWIDE for hundreds and hundreds of years. Therefore, it’s ridiculous that a noose has to be directly related to a white person hanging a black person in the United States.
That’s it. It’s ridiculous. Should we boycott the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in the US because there was lynching in that movie? Maybe we should tear down the white house, that’s being a bit racist isn’t it? WHITE house?
Edit to Lisa: Lisa there is no ignorance here, It seems to me though that you are a bit intolerant of other people’s opinions. This is a forum where people come to speak openly, and in this case the person was not offensive at all and you went off on an angry rant – all of which took away from your valid points and informative answer.

  2. Lisa W Said,

everyone is so politically correct nowdays. if someone is slightly hurt by something, then it is racism. it is better to just shut your mouth and have zero opinions of your own.

  3. Jani Said,

I normally ignore these types of questions but you seem like you MAY be sincere. Let me break it down to you. A noose is to a Black person what a swastika is to a Jewish person. Get it? If you need further clarification, try telling an Italian over 30 that he/she reminds you of Mussolini and you probably won’t have any teeth left. Clearly if people are reacting this way, there is SOME reason for it, even if you personally can’t make the connection. Your question borders on being 100% insensitive, to put it mildly. If you want to know more, do some research and I guarantee that you’ll understand. Have a good one.

  4. Hussein for President Said,

I don’t know if you are crazy, maybe naive.
I can’t understand with the bloody history that this country has that people just don’t get it! You can do an internet search, look in history books and you will find that the people lynched in this country in HUGE numbers were black in the south. Talk about denial.

Faldo suggested that “to take Tiger on, maybe they should just gang up (on him) for a while.”
“Lynch him in a back alley,” Tilghman replied.
Tilghman said she apologized directly to the world’s No. 1 player, and Woods’ agent issued a statement that said it was a non-issue.

The cover was in response to those comments. I heard it on the radio and how many times in your life have you heard anyone use the word “noose” in any context and there is no black person involved?
I didn’t personally take offense to the comments but felt Woods was owed an apology and apparently they did this. As long as people like you make excuses or remain in denial, these issues will continue to happen.
Edited to add a note to Jani. No anger here just frustration over you and other people’s ignorance. That’s all.

  5. Sands Said,

Of course, historically, all races have been lynched at one point or another. The difference, and the reason for the sensitivity, is that lynchings in the U.S. have been done primarily to one race, and as recently as 30-40 years ago. There are still people alive who are the family members of those that were the victims of hangings. Its still fresh. Intent is only half of it, the other half is perception. And, if people are perceiving it as such, it has to be examined. I personally think the photo was in poor taste.

  6. Lisa W Said,

The thing is, White people were lynched, in the 14, 15, and 16th centuries(and times after that, such as the West in the 1850’s), when kings had issues, and there were all sorts of penalties for infractions(mostly England). You have to remember that there was a time that kings had absolute power to do what they pleased, and this did include lynching. It is very unsafe to assume that White people weren’t lynched. The fact that white people were lynched can be proved with a bit of history review. I am not sure how a noose has to do with implied racism, but it could be perceived that way by a variety of people. The answer is really impossible to determine, there are limitless possibilities of answers.
