What Are My Acceptance Chances?

Posted by admin

so, i just finished my junior year in high school…and i was wondering what my chances in college might be.
GPA: 3.94 unweighted
SAT: 770 critical reading, 730 math
I’ve taken 5 AP’s so far in highschool and am taking 6 AP’s next year as well. I did very well in all (got 4s or 5s on all of the exams).
Next year, I’m going to be captain of the varsity girls golf team and (hopefully) co-captain of the varsity girls soccer team. I’m VP of the Literary Society and editor of my high school’s lit mag, where I’ve been published. I’m going to be the lifestyles editor of my highschool paper. My artwork has been showcased in local magazines, and I’ve won several awards at local art festivals. I have about 300 community service hours, mostly through my local museum and habitat for humanity. I’m in National Honors Society.
What would my chances be with schools like: UChicago, Wesleyan, Georgetown, Swarthmore, Vassar, Carleton, NYU, or maybe even a few Ivies…?

  1. millanca Said,

I love the look of your ECs. They are really individualized, so stick with the art. Make sure to submit a portfolio in your application, as a supplement.
I don’t know why you’re so afraid to apply to Ivies! UChicago and Georgetown are ranked higher than a number of Ivies, and I think Georgetown has a lower admission rate than a few of them. So you might actually have better chances at some of them. Okay, so I’ll get into the chances now. I skipped Carleton because I really don’t know anything about it.
UChicago: It’s hard to tell. The most important things at Chicago (I went to an information session + tour there last weekend, so this is very up-to-date) are, in order, transcript, then essays/”all the things you control,” then test scores, I believe. “All the things you control,” which is how the admissions officer there described it means interviews, supplements, recommendations, in addition to essays. So UChicago is pretty hard to guess without knowing those top two things yet. But From what you’ve told me, I think you’re in the running.
Wesleyan: I almost skipped this the first time around. I don’t know that much about its admissions, but I would say you have similar chances here and at Swarthmore. They’re similar schools.
Georgetown: Good. Make sure to take your SAT Subject tests. Georgetown requires 3, more than most schools. You might want to consider less selective schools in the area too, like GW or American.
Swarthmore: I’m applying here too and I find them incredibly difficult to do chances. They’re like UChicago in that it’s not the numbers that are most important. Again, you’re in the running.
Vassar: Similar to Swarthmore, but a bit less selective. I’d be a little surprised if you didn’t get in here.
    NYU: You’ll probably get in.
Let me just say, I too just finished my junior year, so we’ll be applying in the same year. I’m also applying to UChicago, Georgetown, Swarthmore, and Vassar. I’m a bit daunted to have you in my pool! We have the same number if APs, same scores so far. My CR + M on the SAT is equal to yours, though I have different numbers. And your GPA is better and probably your ECs too, though they’re subjective. So basically, I’m a bit scared to have you in my applicant pool! But nonetheless, I wish you the best.

  2. Paul Said,

pretty good? but I’ve never looked into those colleges.

  3. peter t Said,

You have an excellent shot at all of these schools including the Ivy’s. Chances are you will get into one of the ivies (definitely Cornell) so apply to them. For the ivies, your typical applicant needs an unweighted G.P.A of around 3.8, and S.A.T scores in the 2200+ range. You don’t provide your score on the writing section, but i’ll assume it’s above 700. With that being said, for the ivies since you have the grades, other things then come into play. You have to have something unique about you which in your case is your art which has been showcased. What the Ivy’s like to see are future leaders, or people with unique talent. In your admissions essay discuss some unique aspects about your artwork and maybe how it changed your life, or the life of others and you should be golden considering you already have, or are about to obtain leadership roles on sports teams. Feel free to email me with any further questions.

  4. Patrick Star Said,

I’m a junior myself, and i’ve been researching about colleges and acceptance rates and such.
I’d say you have more than an excellent chance. But may i ask you a question- Do you ever sleep, relax, or chill out? you’ve done absolutely everything out there- you may come across as scattered or too much of an over-acheiver.
Do they even offer that many APs? My school doesn’t find out their results until july!
If I were you, i would not list all of this stuff. You’ll come off as way too intense and you have no clear passions. Pick your two favorite aspects to focus on, and show how much time you’ve dedicated to them, instead of doing absolutely everything under the sun for the sake of an acceptance letter. Make yourself seem like a real person.
    And write an excellent essay!

  5. Johnny D Said,

You have one of the best applications going I think. Colleges don’t care to see you be excellent at EVERYTHING, but you certainly have a tough schedule and good grades and SAT scores. Colleges like to see a focus, and clearly you are probably one of the best in literature out there, so I would think you could get into Vassar, Carleton and NYU easily. The others, I think you got a great shot at, but the aren’t shoo-ins the way those last ones I mentioned were. In addition, you would be a great applicant for any Ivy League. Apply to any college you think you may enjoy. I can see you getting into AT LEAST one ivy. Great job!

  6. Art Star Said,

Apply. You have great credentials, but if everyone who applied to those schools got into those colleges by their transcripts (especially the Ivy League schools), they would be about as populated as Arizona State. You should definitely have above average (they don’t have to be spectacular because of your awesome extracurricular activities, but aim high) recommendations, a solid essay, and a decent writing score (you didn’t list it).
It also depends on what you want to study at those schools. I mean, the business program at University of Chicago would be a lot harder to get into than, say, the anthropology program.
