Historically I’d say most successful golfers on tour had access to a club when they were young. Some as members – Jack Nicklaus, Johhny Miller, Ernie Els are examples of this. Some as caddies or working/helping out at the club – Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Charlie Sifford, Arnold Palmer are examples of this route. Very few take the game up later in life and have success – although it is possible: Calvin Peete did not start playing until he was in his 20’s, played at a municipal course and just kind of figured things out on his own.
